Sport Lead Trip to Thacher State Park

  • John Boyd Thacher State Park Voorheesville, NY, 12186 United States (map)

Come get your outdoor climb on this October at Thacher State Park outside Albany!

Thacher State Park is a relatively new climbing area, having only opened in 2017. It is entirely made up of sport climbing routes, so participants should feel comfortable climbing outside (for some general beta, see Mountain Project).

A few things to note: no dogs are allowed in the climbing area, and the entrance to the crag is through a very narrow squeeze chimney. Entrance to the climbing area is free, but you will need to register at the visitor’s center (9 AM to 5 PM) before climbing. More specific information about visiting Thacher can be found here.

Lead experience is definitely encouraged, but if you don't lead and still want to come, feel free to reach out to other members to find someone who does lead and would be comfortable setting up a toprope. Feel free to post in the event to coordinate!

***IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER*** Climbing is inherently dangerous! PHLash is a peer-led climbing group whose mission is to collectively create an inclusive space in the greater rock climbing community. We are not guides and you assume any and all responsibility for your safety and needs. We are happy to share our experience and answer any questions.

In terms of accommodations, there is a campground attached to the park itself (details here), and cheap AirBnb options in Albany, which is about 30 minutes’ drive from the park. Depending on interest and schedules, renting a large AirBnb could be an option. The weekend of the trip (October 11–13) is also the last weekend the campground is open for the season, so the remaining tent spots may go quickly.

If you wish to be a part of any collective campsite or Airbnb reservations, please post in the spreadsheet (see Facebook event discussion) with your preference by Tuesday, September 10th.

Also see the Facebook event discussion for coordinating rides—it’s about four hours by car from Philly to the park.

Please direct any questions to Chris (see the Facebook page), your host for the event!
